Grandparent Alienation
Grandparent alienation is a form of elder abuse or mistreatment and occurs when grandparents are unjustly denied opportunities to spend time or develop a relationship with their grandchildren. It can take many forms, including:
withholding, or threatening to withhold, contact with the grandchildren unless the grandparents agree to provide financial or other support in exchange
limiting grandparents’ access to the children
emotional blackmailing
bullying the grandparents, or blocking contact with the grandchildren unless the grandparents agree with parents around housing or inheritances
As an experienced and accredited mediator specializing in issues surrounding older adults, Shauna-marie can help grandparents and parents sort out varying discontents and disagreements in a way that facilitates healthy and supportive relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren, and healthier and happier family systems.
By focussing on the children’s best interests, Shauna works with families to uncover root causes of grandparent alienation and to determine a solution-focussed path forward that everyone agrees to.
“… I was refused access to my granddaughters … Shauna helped me to stay focussed on the goal of seeing my grandchildren again … today I see [them] on a regular basis and can participate in their lives … a gift I am eternally grateful for …”
